Narcan administration & delivery

Life-Saving Action: Narcan (Naloxone) Training

Equipping our Coalition to Prevent Overdose

What is Narcan Training?

Narcan (the brand name for Naloxone) is a safe, easy-to-use nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose in minutes. Our Narcan Training is a brief, hands-on session designed to empower church leaders, volunteers, and community members to act quickly and confidently in an emergency.

In this training, you will learn how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to administer the medication that could save a life.

What You Will Learn

In less than an hour, participants will gain the skills and confidence to:

Identify the Signs: Learn the physical indicators of an opioid overdose (respiratory distress, blue tint to skin/lips, or loss of consciousness).

Administer Naloxone: Step-by-step instruction on how to use the nasal spray effectively.

Emergency Response: Understand the critical steps to take while waiting for emergency medical services (EMS) to arrive.

Post-Reversal Care: Learn how to support an individual immediately after they have been revived.

Why Is This Important for the Church?

The opioid crisis affects every corner of our community—including our pews and our neighborhoods. Providing Narcan training within our coalition is a tangible expression of our mission to:

Be a Sanctuary: Ensure that our churches are the safest possible places for those struggling with addiction.

Remove Shame: By openly training for overdose prevention, we help break the silence and stigma that often prevent people from seeking help.

Preserve Life: We believe every life is precious and deserves a second chance at recovery and grace.

Note: Narcan is safe, non-addictive, and cannot harm someone who is not experiencing an opioid overdose. It is a vital tool in every first-aid kit.

Recovery Ally Training

New Training Opportunity: Recovery Ally Training

Developed by VCU Rams in Recovery

What is a Recovery Ally?

A Recovery Ally is a person—whether a pastor, ministry leader, or congregant—who is trained to support, advocate for, and walk alongside individuals struggling with substance use disorders and those in recovery.

Becoming an Ally means moving beyond the stigma of addiction to see the person behind the struggle. It is about creating a "recovery-ready" church environment where individuals do not have to choose between their faith community and their healing.

What You Will Learn

The Recovery Ally training is a comprehensive, interactive program (typically 3 hours) that equips you with the tools to be a source of hope and practical help. Participants are trained to:

Change the Language: Learn how to use person-first, non-stigmatizing language that fosters healing rather than shame.

Understand the Science: Gain a basic understanding of the biological and neurological aspects of addiction.

Identify Pathways: Explore the many "pathways to recovery," recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to sobriety.

Provide Active Support: Learn how to listen without judgment and bridge the gap between a person in crisis and professional resources.

Address Inequity: Understand the intersection of racial justice and recovery to better serve diverse populations.

Why This Matters for Our Churches

Recovery happens in community. By training our leaders and members to be Recovery Allies, The Embassy Coalition of Churches can:

Reduce Stigma: Break the silence that often keeps people from seeking help within the church.

Save Lives: Learn to recognize the signs of struggle and how to connect people to life-saving resources.

Build Resilience: Help our neighbors build the "recovery capital" (social and spiritual support) needed to sustain long-term wellness.
